I quit taking supplements because of the expense and because, to tell the truth, I didn’t personally feel any improvement in energy or my overall health. Of course, it would be hard to tell unless I underwent a meticulous study of the “before and after” kind, but there is no need. There is plenty of information out there to prove the benefits of real food. 

In the last few years I have become very interested in natural healthy real foods and their benefits. Chia seeds, quinoa for example, and I have just come across maca.

Maca: Lepidium meyenii is a root vegetable native to the high Andes of Peru and Bolivia.

Maca is widely used for medicinal purposes and can be found in powder and various other forms. It is claimed to have many benefits:

  • Increases energy
  • Boosts mood
  • Increases sex drive
  • Enhances the immune system and thus has disease-fighting properties.

Back to real food, forget supplements!

In the radio broadcast in NPR : Americans urged to rethink dietary supplement use , they say that not only don’t people using certain supplements not live longer, but to our surprise they die younger! We have given in to the supplement fad/market and the studies are actually paid by the big supplement companies, urging us to pop them like candy!

As NPR broadcast stated, most people don’t need supplements and when consumed, the body can’t readily absorb them as it would with real food. Yes, we need calcium but let’s go to the source! We need vitamin D, let’s go out and expose ourselves to the sun, being careful though.

We seem to live in a society that believes that more is better and not only that, we also believe that the least effort will take us were we want to be! We know from fad diets, overnight results do not exist!!! We do die overnight though, that is a fact! The rest is up for grabs. But some things are up to us!

Let’s accept we need to make a little effort. Not only will we save money but better our health.

Let’s go back to REAL FOOD our bodies DO recognize, and know what to do with!
